Unlock Your Business Potential with HOBA®’s 12 Guiding Principles
Streamline Processes, Enhance Collaboration, and Achieve Continuous Improvement
HOBA®’s principles are the backbone of its transformation framework, guiding organisations towards sustainable success.
Explore the Principles
HOBA® Principles are based off Agile principles
HOBA® Principles are categorized into three themes, adapted from the Agile Scrum framework to suit the unique needs of business transformation:

Optimizing Operations for Success
HOBA®’s principles are designed to optimise operations, promoting efficiency and effectiveness across the organisation. These principles guide teams in making strategic decisions that align with the overall business vision.
Tested and Trusted
HOBA® principles are not just theoretical; they have been tested and proven in real-world transformation scenarios. These principles provide a practical framework for organisations to follow, ensuring that transformation efforts are grounded in best practices.

HOBA® Principles
The 12 principles are organized into 3 groups:
Regular Delivery of Business Architecture Views
#1 — Early and continuous delivery of valuable Architecture views
Our primary objective is to provide early and continuous delivery of valuable Architecture views that make business sense. It isn’t about delivering volumes of documentation, but rather about delivering the minimum effective dose of Architecture that provides the insight the business needs to make sound strategic decisions.
#2 — Provides leadership in the benefits realisation strategy and plan
As Business Architects and business leaders, we bear the torch of benefits realisation. Our responsibility extends beyond just charting the path of transformation; we are accountable for articulating the strategy and plan that turns envisioned benefits into reality. We lead the organisation through the complexities of change, with an eye always on the tangible benefits that each step should deliver.
#3 — Delivering Architecture usable views is primary measure of progress
The primary measure of our progress is the delivery of usable Architecture views. In the pursuit of business transformation, it’s easy to get lost in the process. But at HOBA, we keep our focus on what truly matters — delivering Architecture views that are not just complete but usable, fostering real progress in the transformation journey.
#4 — Maintain a sustainable pace of development
Sustainable development is key. The architects, developers, and users should be able to maintain a constant pace indefinitely. It’s important to avoid burnout and ensure the consistent delivery of quality Architecture views. This principle is about finding the right balance between speed and sustainability.
Team Communication
#5 — Business people and Architects (Business & IT) must work together daily
This principle emphasises the importance of collaboration between business stakeholders and architects. By working together daily, we ensure that transformation efforts are aligned with business needs and that all stakeholders have a voice in the transformation process.
#6 — Face-to-face conversation is most effective to convey information between teams
While digital communication has its place, the most effective way to convey information is through face-to-face conversation. This principle highlights the value of direct interaction in building understanding and fostering collaboration. We promote co-location and facilitate regular face-to-face interactions between teams.
#7 — Best Architectures emerge from self-organising teams
Self-organising teams are at the heart of agile practices. This principle acknowledges that the best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from teams that have the autonomy and authority to manage their own work. We encourage self-organisation at all levels of the organisation.
#8 — Build teams around motivated individuals and provide support and trust
The right team makes all the difference. This principle underlines the importance of building teams around motivated individuals, providing them with the environment, support, and trust they need to get the job done. We believe in the power of motivated teams and invest in their development and wellbeing.
#9 — Reflect regularly, tune and adjust process and behaviour to become more effective
Continuous improvement is a cornerstone of agile practice. This principle advocates for regular reflection and adaptation. We encourage teams to look back, learn from their experiences, and fine-tune their processes and behaviours for greater effectiveness.
Design Excellence
#10 — Continuous focus on technical excellence
Technical excellence and good design enhance agility. This principle is about maintaining a continuous focus on design and technical quality. We ensure that our transformation efforts are underpinned by solid, well-designed solutions that enhance the agility of the organisation.
#11 — Simplicity is the art to minimising wasteful work
Simplicity is key. This principle promotes the art of minimising unnecessary work. In the context of business transformation, it’s about focusing on what truly adds value and eliminating waste. We help organisations simplify their processes and focus on what matters most.
#12 — Welcome changing requirements for customer’s advantage
Change is a constant in business. This principle welcomes changing requirements, even late in the transformation process, if it benefits the customer. We harness change to provide a competitive advantage for the customer, ensuring that transformation efforts remain relevant and impactful.
